In 1996, Josh Kesselman faced a significant challenge that would become a pivotal moment in his career. Following an incident where he unknowingly sold a bong to a woman whose father worked for the US government, Kesselman RAW store was raided, and he was placed under house arrest. During this raid, many of his products were confiscated. However, his rolling papers were spared as they were not illegal.

 

This incident marked a turning point for Kesselman. Later that year, he relocated to Arizona, where he started a smoke shop supply and distribution company. This move signified a fresh start and laid the groundwork for what would eventually become the RAW brand. Kesselman resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity played a crucial role in the development of his business acumen and the eventual success of RAW.

 

After opening his RAW store in 1993, Josh Kesselman recognized a gap in the smoke shop market for natural, unbleached rolling papers. Believing that such papers would enhance the smoking experience by not altering the flavor, Kesselman invested in developing these papers in 2004. This led to the creation of RAW "vegan" unbleached rolling papers, making RAW the first to offer such a product. In 2005, RAW launched its first line of rolling papers made from unbleached plants, free from chemicals, additives, and dyes, cementing its position as an innovator in the market.
